The government is considering permitting 100% FDI in the market place format of e-commerce retailing with a view to attract more foreign investments.

The norms on foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sectors of e-commerce, and IT and ITeS are expected to be part of detailed guidelines, which would be rolled out soon by the government, sources said.

Last week, a group of senior officials from departments of DIPP, Corporate Affairs and Economic Affairs, among others, discussed these matters in great detail.

According to sources, the DIPP has suggested that 100% FDI should be allowed in "market place model of e-commerce" activities.

In such a model, the e-commerce company provides an online platform for buyers and a sellers.

At present, global e-tailer giants like Amazon and Ebay are operating online marketplaces in India while homegrown players like Flipkart and Snapdeal have foreign investments even as there are no clear FDI guidelines on various online retail models.

An e-commerce firm carries its business either through market place model or inventory based model.
Working as an IT professional in Bengaluru was getting tiresome for Meghanath Singh. He had grown up in Manipur, and during his almost two decades in Bengaluru, he had to rely on visiting relatives to provide him with home-cooked food.

That gave him an idea. He quit his job in 2014 and teamed up with two friends, Surchand Wahengbam and Ratheesh Elayat, to start an e-commerce platform that sells exclusive eco-friendly North East products, from Manipur's black rice to Nagaland's handmade shawls.

Today, their venture Giskaa has around 1,500 sellers, from all the eight states of the Northeast selling products around the world and Singh says the venture is profitable.

A number of e-commerce portals focused on products from a certain region have emerged — Kashmirbox for Kashmiri products, Jaypore for ethnic Rajasthani products, and Farsankart for Gujarati snacks. And unlike the better-known big etailers, these portals have a significant customer base outside India, and all say they are profitable.

Delhi-based Jaypore, launched in 2012 by Puneet Chawla and Shilpa Sharma, started as a premium brand for Rajasthani jewellery and handicrafts, but has since expanded to include a range of ethnic products from several regions of India. Chawla says Jaypore sees on an average around 8,000 monthly transactions, with an average bill size of Rs 4,800.

The highest selling products are crafts like Madhubani paintings of Bihar and block printing or Kalamkari paintings of Andhra Pradesh. It recently raised Rs 30 crore from venture firm Aavishkaar to expand their reach and market their brand.

While Chawla knew right from day one who Jaypore's target customers were going to be, for Farsankart, an online platform that sells farsan (fried Gujarati snacks) from vendors in Vadodara, the customers were a surprise.

"Almost 90% of our overseas customers are Gujarati but the majority of the customers in India are non-Gujarati, which is strange. I never knew farsan was popular among people who weren't Gujaratis," says founder Darshan Dhruv who started the platform in 2011.

Giskaa's Singh too realized an interesting fact about his customers. "Our customers were not the typical e-commerce crowd. They were in the age group of 45 to 50 with no obvious affinity towards the North East," he says.

May be it was helped by the fact that Giskaa includes little motifs and the history behind every particular product that is shipped. "The user gets to read why the product is famous in a particular region of the North East and the artisan who made it," says Singh.

Most have to work closely with the artisans and vendors to get them online. "We list most of the products ourselves as the artisans have little knowledge of e-commerce," says Singh.

Kashmirbox's Muheet Mehraj, having been born and brought up in Srinagar, wanted to change the ecosystem around the Kashmiri artisans who had spent years making products like pashmina shawls, carpets, and ethnic wear. Today, the platform has over 2,000 artisans who are provided logistics and supply chain support.

"The artisans also have a 10% equity in the company," he says. Half of its Indian customer base comes from tier 2-3 cities of India.

A significant chunk of all their revenues comes from international customers. Jaypore ships to over 50 countries and 25% of its revenue comes from countries like UK, Canada, and the US. Farsankart, which broke even in one year, sees 40% of its revenue coming from the US and the UK. Kashmirbox ships to 30 countries, its average ticket size is Rs 3,500 and became profitable last year.

Mehraj says building a company in an ecosystem like Kashmir was hard, made tougher by the fact that the region has poor electricity service.

"But the main challenge for a niche e-commerce site is that most products are not branded. So there is a trust issue," says Atrai Mukherjee, who faced the problem when she started MySweetStore, an online platform selling Bengali sweets, in 2014. She sold it off within a year to a Bengali sweet shop, after she relocated to Mumbai.

The other challenge is scaling the business, since they are focussed only on one region. Jaypore realized it early. Its three-member cluster development team now travels all across India looking for unique and ethnic products that can be added to Jaypore's portfolio. Farsankart is planning to go beyond Vadodara. Kashmirbox wants to expand slowly. Mehraj says it may look at Rajasthan next.
Phone makers, trying to renew consumer appetite, are turning to virtual reality headsets that can be paired with their devices to view videos and play games.
"With a slowing smartphone market, one of the ways to generate additional profit is to become a major player in new categories like smartwatches, cameras or virtual reality goggles," said Ian Fogg, head of mobile at research firm IHS.
"These are markets where there is not yet a leader so there is a lot more room for growth," he told AFP.
Samsung, the world's number one smartphone maker, announced at the Mobile World Congress trade fair in Barcelona that it would give away its Gear VR headset for free with every pre-order for its new flagship Galaxy S7 phone.
Thousands of people donned the headsets - which have a slot where you insert a smartphone - to view the presentation of the firm's new phones at a Barcelona congress centre on the eve of the start of the fair.
The crowd gasped and applauded as the new phones appeared to be floating in the air before their eyes.
When they removed their headsets they saw that Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg had made a surprise appearance at the presentation.
Saturated smartphone marketThe headsets - which went on sale in November - are powered by technology developed by Oculus, a virtual reality company Facebook bought in 2014 for $2 billion (1.8 billion euros).
"VR is the next platform where anyone can experience anything they want," he said.
Rival South Korean tech firm LG, which lost money from its mobile business last year, unveiled its own virtual reality goggles to go with its new G5 smartphone at the fair.
"If this does not tell you the industry is moving to virtual reality, I don't know what does," said Jefferson Wang, senior partner at IBB Consulting that focuses on the wireless and tech sectors.
The emphasis on virtual reality comes as the increasingly-saturated smartphone market begins to slow.
Research firm TrendForce predicts global smartphone sales will grow by 8.1 percent in 2016, down from 10.3 percent last year.
Struggling Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC has decided to refocus completely on virtual reality and away from smartphones.
"Yes, smartphones are important, but to create a natural extension to other connected devices like wearables (watches...) and virtual reality is more important," the company's new chief executive Cher Wang said last month in an interview with Britain's The Telegraph newspaper.
The smartphone virtual reality headsets sparked huge interest at the trade fair in Barcelona, which ends on Thursday.
Long lines formed outside a pop-up virtual reality theatre set up by Samsung that allowed people to experience a roller coaster ride using the Gear VR headset as their seats rocked from side to side.
Tilt your head back with the headset on and you see a clear blue sky. Turn sideways and you see the rest of an amusement park and mountains in the distance. Look down and you see a fast approaching plunge.
People gripped the arms of their seats even though they were not moving and raised their hands in the air during the simulations.
'Here to stay'Research firm CCS Insight predicts the number of sold virtual reality devices will grow from 2.2 million last year to 20 million in 2018, with smartphone-based devices representing the vast majority.
"Smartphone virtual reality is poised to be the big volume driver for virtual reality in coming years," the company's chief of research, Ben Wood, told AFP.
More sophisticated virtual reality headsets that run on an expensive computer will remain a niche product because of their high cost, he added.
Some users of the smartphone virtual reality headsets complained of being able to see the pixels in the images being broadcast.
"The quality of the systems is not quite there yet," said Edward Tang, founder and president of Avegant which makes virtual reality headsets.
"But there is no doubt virtual reality is here to stay."
London:  The social networking website Facebook can be used to track people's sleeping habits by building up a database of when your friends were seen last online busy chatting or "liking" posts on Facebook, a media report said.

"Many people visit Facebook as the first thing in the morning and the last thing before going to bed. It is, therefore, possible to get a good impression of their sleeping habits," said San Francisco-based software engineer Soren Louv-Jansen in a Mail Online report.

For the study, Louv-Jansen used "time stamps" from Facebook's Messenger service to see when his friends were asleep.

He was curious to see where the "last seen" data was coming from and after doing some research, he found a list of his Facebook friends' user IDs and last activity "time stamps".

This, he added, is embedded in the initial mark-up of Messenger.com and can be viewed by simply visiting the website and clicking "View Source" to see for yourself.

"By creating a simple service that checks Facebook every 10 minutes, I'm able to get an accurate picture of my friends' Facebook usage," said Louv-Jansen, who published the programme's source code onto GitHub.

GitHub is used by many developers and hackers to put large amounts of information for developer communities to see and take advantage of, the report said.
Facebook earlier this month started rolling out its Live Video streaming feature to countries other than the US. The feature was at first limited to select iOS users and celebrities and was later rolled-out to all the iOS users in the US. Now the social media giant has announced that the feature will be additionally rolling it out to 30 countries however, it did not specify which ones. The company added that the feature will also be arriving to Android devices starting next week.
The social network will be rolling out the Live Video streaming feature to its Android users in the US followed by other countries soon. In addition, the feature will continue to roll out to Facebook Pages as well in the coming weeks. The company in the blog post stated that, "more than 50 percent of people watching live videos are using Android devices."
Users can check if they have the live streaming tool by tapping on the Update Status bar at the top of the News Feed and looking for the Live Video icon. Facebook Live Videos work in a similar fashion as Twitter's Periscope. Users can start streaming a live video and the viewers can comment and like the stream. Facebook will also show the number of views on the live streaming video.
Last week, Facebook rolled out its Reactions emojis worldwide. The emojis that the company started testing in October last year show: "love," "yay," "wow," "haha," "sad," and "angry," and are similar to regular emojis used in chat. The Reactions emojis are already available in Spain, Ireland, Chile, Portugal, Philippines, and Japan.

WhatsApp last week launched official beta testing programme through Google Play to expand the availability of app to more testers. The popular instant messaging service has in a week released multiple builds of its Android app, adding new features such as ability to copy links from chat, improved control over chat clearing, and more.

Android Police reports that the new features have been added in between builds 2.12.453 (currently available via Google Play) and 2.12.489 (latest version available via official site). Those who cannot wait for the new version to hit Google Play can download it from the company's site or via the new Google Play beta testing programme.

To start off, WhatsApp for Android is adding a new tab for showing the shared link history. The latest version lists the shared links history alongside the media history tab that shows all the media (images and videos) shared. According to the screenshots of links tab in WhatsApp for Android, the links will appear with rich preview and on tapping will open the chat conversation. The feature will allow users to easily browse through the shared links between friends and family without the need to star them.

The new version also allows link copying which works with tap and hold. Previously, WhatsApp for Android didn't allow link copying and rather offered the option to copy the complete chat including the URL.

Another notable addition in the latest version is for clearing chat history. WhatsApp for Android will get more granular control over chat clearing with options to delete chats older than 30 days or 6 months. Notably, users will also get a checkbox when clearing chats to keep a starred message which is a very useful feature.

It's worth noting that we downloaded the latest 2.12.489 version from the company's website to check the new features but were unable to see the new shared link history tab in chats while the other two features were available for use.

Last month, the messaging service WhatsApp announced that it now had 1 billion monthly active users.

So far, there is no word when the features will make it to the Google Play store or to iOS users. But we can expect it to be available in coming weeks.

Too often in IT, a wait-and-see approach is taken. Changes in workflow and project management arise from immediate need, and then IT swoops in to make sense of it all. Experts in the industry argue that this model is ill-advised for instituting a cloud strategy. Implementation needs to come from the top-down. This coming year will make or break the cloud enterprise, and the best method is to develop and implement a cogent plan. That plan may include hybrid models, since trust in cloud computing isn’t where it needs to be just yet. As the technology matures, more users will be comfortable getting on board.

Businesses will face a challenge in recruiting and retaining trained cloud engineers and support professionals. According to Forbes, a certification in cloud computing could mean a 30 to 50 percent pay increase. An online information technology degree can get you on the path to fulfilling this need. Mobile devices can be both the instruments and victims of privacy violations. Google’s latest innovation, Google Glass, has been pre-emptively banned at a diner in Seattle due to the security implications of an unobtrusive mobile device capable of discreetly recording audio, video and still footage in public and private places. However, most security threats from mobile devices result from the manner in which the consumer uses the technology:

Consumers who elect to set PINs and passwords for their mobile devices often choose easily deciphered codes, such as 1234 or 0000.
Users may unknowingly download malware disguised as a useful application.
Out-of-date operating systems may pose threats. OS manufacturers periodically release security patches and fixes, but it is up to the consumer to update their devices. Older devices may not support new updates to the OS.
Out-of-date software presents similar security risks. Attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software.
Wireless transmissions are not always encrypted, making information sent via mobile devices easier to intercept.

With users treating their devices in such a blasé fashion, it can be difficult and frustrating for IT specialists to help users avoid security and privacy mishaps—especially when those devices are used for company purposes.

Social media is a competitive market. In the rush to add new features to current offerings, user privacy sometimes gets left on the back burner. Apps and plug-ins that utilize GPS location and single access sign-on present unique security concerns for users. Most social media features now require users to grant access to their personal information, including publicly shared pictures and status updates, before they can use the service. Users innocently share this data so that they can register for marketing incentives like coupons on raffle drawings.

The icing on the cake is that companies are largely left to their own devices when it comes to developing and instituting security policies. There is no universal security legislation, and companies are free to change their policies as they see fit. Facebook, for example, has changed their security policy and privacy settings numerous times in recent years, leaving some users feeling confused and unprotected.

But how much do users actually value their privacy? This report from NBC News shows data that suggests social media users value their privacy less than those who avoid social media networks. A poll conducted by The Ponemon Institute shows that feelings on privacy have become polarized. Thirty-six percent of participants said they felt privacy was less important than it was five years ago; the exact same percentage said they felt it was more important. Interestingly, the two groups agreed that they have less control over their information than they did five years ago.

In marketing, you can be too social. Or not social enough. Or social where it doesn’t count -- the digital equivalent of showing up at the wrong party. How to know if this applies to you? Here, three signs that you need to fix your strategy -- and where you need to double down.

Warning #1: You aren’t seeing any business results.

Solution: “Results” can mean so many things -- increasing brand awareness, building authority in your industry, boosting sales or conversions, giving your brand personality, servicing customers or something totally different. There’s no way your social media presence will accomplish all those things at once, so focus on just one or two goals to start. Figure out what your top priority is, and then think about using social media more strategically to accomplish that goal.

Warning #2: You feel like you’re shouting into the ether.

Solution: You may not be using the appropriate social networks. If you’re a company with largely rural customers, for example, what are you doing on Twitter? According to the Pew Research Center, that platform is far more popular with urbanites. There’s no rule that you have to be on every platform, so pick the ones that match your audience. One way to figure that out: Check your website’s Google Analytics to see which networks are most robustly referring traffic. That’s where your audience is. Now go meet them there.

Warning #3: Your followers rarely like, share or comment.

Solution: Are you being too self-promotional? Take a look at MailChimp’s social media. The company sells email services, but its content focuses on making email suck a little less for us all. (Recent tweet: “Our content calendar makes us really happy. Here’s why you should use one,” and a link to read more.) Saddleback Bags sells leather goods, but its social content frequently focuses on the adventurous lives of people who use them. What both have in common: Rather than being self-promotional, they’re creating value for their audience. Think about the ways your products or services can help people and the larger context in which your company operates. That’s what your customers want from you -- and if you deliver, they’ll like it (and share and comment).
This morning, you logged into your company account and find that your are losing number of followers from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc . Don’t worry here are simple theory to stop losing your followers at social media.

You want to make your websites more dynamic by adding a feedback form, creating a private area where members can upload images that are automatically resized, or perhaps storing all your content in a database. The problem is, you’re not a programmer and the thought of writing code sends a chill up your spine. Or maybe you’ve dabbled a bit in PHP and MySQL, but you can't get past baby steps. If this describes you, then you’ve just found the right book.
PHP and the MySQL database are deservedly the most popular combination for creating dynamic websites. They’re free, easy to use, and provided by many web hosting companies in their standard packages. Unfortunately, most PHP books either expect you to be an expert already or force you to go through endless exercises of little practical value. In contrast, this book gives you real value right away through a series of practical examples that you can incorporate directly into your sites, optimizing performance and adding functionality such as file uploading, email feedback forms, image galleries, content management systems, and much more. Each solution is created with not only functionality in mind, but also visual design.
But this book doesn’t just provide a collection of ready-made scripts: each PHP solution builds on what's gone before, teaching you the basics of PHP and database design quickly and painlessly. By the end of the book, you’ll have the confidence to start writing your own scripts, or if you prefer to leave that task to others, to adapt existing scripts to your own requirements.
Right from the start, you’re shown how easy it is to protect your sites by adopting secure coding practices. The book has been written with an eye on forward and backward compatibility recommending PHP 5 techniques, but providing alternative solutions for servers still running PHP 4.3. All database examples demonstrate how to use the original MySQL extension, MySQL Improved, or the PHP Data Objects (PDO) introduced in PHP 5.1, letting you choose the most suitable option for your setup.
